The Second Annual Biofuels Law and Regulation Conference, "The Renewable Energy Legislation Puzzle: Putting the Pieces Together," will be held at the University of Illinois I-Hotel in Champaign, Illinois on Friday, April 9, 2010.

This year's conference is being held as the University of Illinois Law Review's Annual Symposium.
The Symposium Issue containing the contributions from the speakers will be published as the Law Review’s March 2011 issue.

Sponsors of the conference include the University of Illinois Energy Biosciences Institute’s (EBI) Biofuels Law and Regulation Program and the Program in Intellectual Property & Technology Law at the College of Law.

The symposium focuses on a broad array of legal and regulatory challenges to establishing viable renewable energy systems in the United States, including:

  • Regulation of a carbon economy
  • Incorporating agriculture’s role in combating climate change into national legislation
  • How science can inform standards that rely on the calculation of greenhouse values of various ecosystems
  • The economic and policy implications of the proposed Biomass Crop Assistance Program regulation
  • Integrating assessment, planning, and practice protocols and models from existing agricultural conservation programs into sustainability requirements for biomass cropping systems
  • How economic modeling can inform biofuels regulation
  • The regulation of geologic carbon sequestration
  • An analysis of the efficacy of the U.S. Renewable Fuels Standard mandate

Each session will include question and answer and brainstorming opportunities with renowned academic experts in biofuels law and regulation. Attendees will represent a wide variety of law and regulatory fields encompassing government, academia, industry and non-governmental organizations.
